Rochdale Ramblers and council work together to keep footpaths open

Date published: 03 July 2014

The Rights of Way Forum, attended Rochdale Ramblers, council staff, a local councillor and other walking and bridleway groups welcomed the two rangers from United Utilities who cover the Watergrove/Naden area and the Piethorne area.

Seven of the 10 recent footpath reports Rochdale Ramblers had submitted have been resolved with three others being referred for legal issues. Several specific problem areas were discussed in more detail and a plan of action agreed. An update of the review of the Definitive Map was provided.

Roy Thorniley, Footpath and Countryside Secretary on behalf of The Rochdale Ramblers, said: “Rochdale has the largest rights of way network in Greater Manchester with 1,782 Public Rights of Way covering over 345 miles and it is a huge task keeping the network surveyed and maintained.

“We have established an excellent working relationship with the Council's Corporate Enforcement Officers and the response to our reports from the Environmental Management Maintenance Team has been exceptional.

“The photographs show just one of the many new stiles and gates that have been put up by the Council as a result of your reports. A once inaccessible stone stile with steps missing made good again.

“Please keep your reports coming in, you do make a difference. Let us know about any obstructions or damaged gates and stiles you find, a grid reference and a photo would be great.”
