Heywood 1940s Day

Date published: 28 June 2014

Heywood stepped back in time today (Saturday 28 June) for the annual 1940s day event.

The event, which is in its sixth year, saw a number of attractions at different venues across Heywood.

Many local people dressed for the occasion dressing in clothes traditionally from the 1940s or in armed forces uniforms from that time period. Local shops also decorated their shop windows with 1940s items and people lined the street to watch the Armed Forces parade.

Activities included:

  • An Armed Forces parade
  • A performance by the Salvation Army Brass Band
  • A vehicle parade
  • A performance from the Heywood Voice Choir
  • Afternoon tea dances
  • A Big Band Night

Melanie Caffrey who helped organise the event said: “It has gone really well. We have had a great turnout and have been exceptionally busy. We haven’t let the weather stop us all from having a good time.”

Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Carol Wardle, who had a stall at the event to raise money for the Mayor’s Charity appeal, echoed praise for the event.

She said: “It is a shame about the weather but it has been a great day. There has been a great response and it has been a brilliant event.”

The event was held in line with Armed Forces Day, which is run every year on 28 June. Armed Forces Day celebrates the men and women of the Armed Forces community past and present.
