Wardle Farmers Market

Date published: 28 June 2014

A farmers market was held in Wardle today (Saturday 28 June) as a way of bringing the local community together.

The market, which was held at The Conservative Club on Ramsden Road, saw sellers of local produce like cheese and pies and crafts from cards and paper flowers selling to the public.

Organiser Mary Mellor said: “We wanted to try and bring the local community together. We all like local produce and fresh food so we thought this would be a good idea to promote that and encourage people to get involved.”

This was the first market held after discussions within the local community.

“There had been talks about holding something like this so we thought we would go ahead and give it a go,” said Mary.

As well as selling local produce and crafts, the market was also raising money for local school, St James by holding a raffle.

Mary added: “They have just built an outdoor classroom so money will go towards that and then anything else we can get we will give to them as well.”

For the first market, Mary saw a positive reaction. She added: “It has been really good and has been a nice day. Obviously the weather has affected things because people tend to come out when it is a bit nicer but hopefully the next one will be brighter.”

Mary hopes that for future markets, stalls can also be held outside to encourage more people in.

The market will now be held on the last Saturday of every month.
