Youngsters complete Duke of Edinburgh Award Bronze Qualifying Expedition

Date published: 27 June 2014

Over 30 young people from across the Borough travelled to the Yorkshire Dales to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Award Bronze Qualifying Expedition. The group was made up of young people from Middleton Technology School, Kingsway Park High School and the Borough’s Open Award Centre.

Each group of young people completed a challenging two day unaccompanied walk of around 20km with one overnight camp.

As part of their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award young people have to complete an expedition. They complete training that allows them to do the walk without adults, covering skills such as navigation, campcraft, teamwork, communication, nutrition and fitness.

Rochdale Youth Service is the licensed organisation for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award across Rochdale. Most schools offer young people the opportunity to participate, but they can also get involved at youth centres and community centres.

The Youth Service has an Open Award Centre which runs every Wednesday evening at Matthew Moss Youth Centre in Rochdale. If you would like to know more about the award or want to get involved please contact Diane.Higgins@rochdale.gov.uk
