Circle celebrates its first birthday in style at the Town Hall

Date published: 26 June 2014

Circle celebrated its first birthday yesterday (25 June) at the Town Hall in Rochdale.

Circle is a membership based service, open to anyone over the age of 50 in the Rochdale borough, which aims to support individuals who want to do more and lead a more flourishing lifestyle.

The hundreds of members who attended the birthday party were treated to a buffet and live music from The Houghton Weavers.

Mark Wynn, Director of Circle, said: “We’re so proud of everything we’ve accomplished at the Circle since beginning a year ago. This birthday party gives us a chance to celebrate our great achievements.”

This year Circle hosted a whole variety of events, including days out to Cheshire, Blackpool, Whitby and Southport Flower Show. Circle also hosted events locally such as theatre visits, ten-pin bowling, lunch events, evening meals and trips to the cinema.

The birthday party hosted stalls from many local organisations, including the Lesbian Gay Foundation, Springhill Hospice, and Rochdale Borough Housing’s Mobile Wardens service.

Pat McDonald, Community Engagement officer at Circle, said: “I didn’t expect such an amazing turnout for the event. I’d like to thank all of our wonderful volunteers who make Circle possible.”

Carol, a member of Circle said: “I’ve met a lot of friends through Circle. It’s a great chance to socialise with local people.”

Prospective members also joined in on the fun at the birthday party, experiencing what Circle has to offer.

Circle also offers a service to help those in their daily lives. They hire local people who care about their community and people in it. All helpers have to undergo a DBS check to ensure the safety of the users.

This service includes helping members in and around the garden; with DIY and other tasks around the home; to get online or re-tune the TV; or to carry shopping home.

Full membership to Circle, including a newsletter via post, is £30 a year, or £20 a year if you want to access your newsletter by email.
