Junior Wardens Win Rochdale Diversity Award

Date published: 24 June 2014

Lower Falinge Junior Wardens have won a Rochdale Diversity Award in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the community.

The youngsters, aged 8-13, were honoured in the Breaking Barriers section of the awards ceremony which was organised by the Kashmir Youth Project and held at Rochdale Town Hall.

Their success was a fitting reward for their efforts in bringing together young people from different ethnic communities to improve their neighbourhood.

Among the work carried out by the junior wardens has been a number of environmental projects including planting flowers, litter picking and graffiti removal.

They have also forged close links with local sheltered housing residents, making gifts for them and carrying out gardening, as well as finding out about what it was like when the residents were young - the games they played and the music they listened to.

In addition the junior wardens have designed posters to promote community safety and tackle dog fouling.

The youngsters, who have also learnt about different cultures in their community, are always eager to welcome newcomers and provide a supportive environment for young people who may be short of confidence.

This latest accolade follows their recent success at the Mayor of Rochdale’s Youth Awards where they won the Contribution to the Community category.

RBH Community Action Worker Khalida Crossley said: “We are incredibly proud of all our junior wardens and thrilled that the Lower Falinge group have won a Diversity Award.

“They do a huge amount to improve their community and promote greater respect and understanding between different age and ethnic groups.”
