Chief Inspector Nadeem Mir presented with Lifetime Achievement Award

Date published: 21 June 2014

Chief Inspector Nadeem Mir was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Diversity Awards.

Chief Inspector Mir has been working in the police for over 30 years in Rochdale and Salford.

He decided to become a police officer after Lord Scarman held a public enquiry which concluded that it was essential that people were encouraged to secure a stake in, feel pride in and have a sense of responsibility for their own area.

Chief Inspector Mir was one of the first Asian officers to join the police and though others saw him as an Asian police officer he always viewed himself as a police officer who happened to be Asian.

He embarked on a journey to make a difference, and to serve members of every community fairly without prejudice or favour. Off of the back of this he became an ambassador and a role model for officers of all backgrounds.

He took on his first leadership challenge as a Sergeant in the Rochdale division, where his innovative work on drug awareness was adopted nationally by the Home Office as good practice and received mention in Parliament.

He was posted to Salford as an Inspector and returned to Rochdale in 2009 to take on the role of Chief Inspector.

His expertise has been sought after locally, nationally and internationally – a number of the EU Member states regularly call upon him to share his experience.

Inspector Umer Khan, who presented Chief Inspector Mir with his award, said: “It must be a most satisfying feeling for Chief Inspector Nadeem Mir to approach his retirement with a feeling of duty fulfilled and deservedly receiving the accolades and respect of his colleagues and the admiration of his family and friends. To have his name spoken with pride. The pride of having seen the obstacles, the opportunity of growth, and the pride of having seen life’s ups and downs succeeded. The pride of being a winner who did not give up fundamental values.”

Speaking to Rochdale Online after receiving his award Chief Inspector Mir said: “It is an absolute honour to have received this award. It is not something you expect in this line of work and to have been given this award by the community is a great pleasure.

“One of the highlights of my career was when the EDL came to town. It was a huge challenge for us and saw us work with the community to ensure that we went out together and that was something that never happened before.

“I plan on retiring shortly but I plan on continuing my voluntary work within the community. This is something I didn’t really expect but it is an honour to receive the award.”
