Borough supports campaign to kick out domestic violence during World Cup

Date published: 20 June 2014

Intelligence suggests a link between major sporting tournaments and a rise in reports of domestic violence and this campaign aims to highlight its devastating consequences.

Councillor Daalat Ali, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “It is estimated that more than one in four women will be the victim of domestic abuse over the course of their lifetime in England and Wales and this is simply unacceptable. Not only does this crime impact on the victim and their family and friends, it also affects our economy, health services, and the criminal justice system. It is an abhorrent crime and we are committed to ending it.”

The national campaign focuses on those who may be at risk of becoming a perpetrator of domestic abuse and aims to raise awareness of the help that is available..

Council officers and PCSOs will be distributing materials to help raise awareness of the issue and share important contact information for those affected by domestic abuse.

It follows the publication of Rochdale Borough Council’s own domestic abuse strategy in April and the launch of our EndTheFear video, which aims to point victims of domestic abuse towards receiving help and advice.
