Kate Garside markets it right for Middleton

Date published: 18 June 2014

Kate Garside, 34, from Norden, who studies graphic design, has designed a new logo for the markets, having won a competition run by Middleton Town Centre Management.

Kate created a design incorporating distinctive market awnings, cleverly laid out in the company’s corporate colour scheme.

Judges, Middleton Town Centre Management’s Chief Executive Adam Torevell and Market Manager, Ashliegh Franklin were impressed by all the entries they received but it was Kate’s logo that finally won the judges over. In particular the judges thought the logo represented a real community feel with an added contemporary look to suit the future of the markets.

Although she has always been interested in art and design, Kate has only recently begun studying graphic design, as due to health reasons she had to leave her career as a physiotherapist and re-think her options. She said: “I decided to keep the brief simple and wanted to use an old fashioned font to represent heritage whilst at the same time present a modern feel to the logo. This has really added to my experience at Hopwood Hall College, it’s been brilliant.”

Adam Torevell commented: “The project has been a great opportunity to build relationships with our local college. It’s also offered students the chance to gain real work experience, which has made it a very worthwhile project.”

Hopwood Hall College lecturer Sharon Drysdale added: “Working on live briefs like this supports progression routes of our students into employment or university and is a great opportunity to build their portfolios.”
