Littleborough children create, celebrate and commemorate the Tour de France

Date published: 16 June 2014

Children from Littleborough Community Primary School visited The Star Tree Studio last week for a creative Tour de France arts and craft project.

Neela Jackson, business manager said: “We are counting down to the biggest free sporting event to visit our borough on Sunday 6 July and to mark the occasion we decided to devise a special project for the children to create, celebrate and commemorate the Tour de France with a visually eye catching piece.”

Children were introduced to the Tour de France with a little background information as well as an explanation of what different coloured jerseys represent. The children then looked at examples of decorated bicycles and learnt about the technique decoupage.

Decoupage is the art of decorating an object by gluing coloured paper cut outs on to it in combination with special paint effects.

Neela added: “The children worked effectively together as a team to decide how to approach the challenge of decorating a bicycle.”

The final piece created by the children was a decoupage decorated bicycle in the Tour de France winning jersey colours.

“The children’s finished piece was fabulous. The children were very proud of their efforts, as were we and we are looking forward to seeing their decorated bicycle on display soon,” said Neela.

Head teacher Martine Sinker said: “Littleborough Community Primary School is delighted to have the opportunity to help celebrate the Tour de France coming to Littleborough.

"This has also been a successful start to a partnership with The Star Tree Studio and the children really enjoyed being able to work with a professional artist.”

The Star Tree Studio is working in partnership with Rochdale Council and is providing free Tour de France themed art and craft activities in the run up to the event.
