Brownie points for dad this Father’s Day

Dad’s in Smithy Bridge got a taste of life as a Brownie at 24 Rochdale Brownies ‘Dads and Daughters Walk’ in celebration of Father’s Day.

The 34 Brownies, aged seven to 10, chose to invite dad’s along to give them an opportunity to spend quality time together and to show them how great it is to be a Brownie.

Dads and daughters walked a two mile circuit around Whittaker, near Hollingworth Lake, and during the walk they had to find items beginning with the letters that spelled out one hundred years (to mark the 100th birthday of Brownies in 2014). Half way around the route the group enjoyed hot dogs and treats at the 'Moorside Café' (staffed by Tawny Owl, Fiona Lewis).

Charlotte Gordon, 7, said: "Some of the letters were quite tricky, so we had to keep our eyes open and think really hard. I loved the hotdogs and having fun with my dad. I can't wait for next week at Brownies when we find out who has won."

Charlotte's dad, Alasdair, said “What a superb night. I wasn't sure what to expect when Charlotte invited me to join her on the Dads and Daughters Walk but the quiz was a great idea. It is amazing how competitive you get knowing that the two of you could win the prize."

Group Leader, Lynne Scales said:  "When we set the date for our event, we hadn't realised it clashed with the opening night of the World Cup. On the homeward stretch, the dads certainly picked up their pace as kick off time approached. This walk is an annual event for our Brownies, and I think everyone is certainly looking forward to next year."

Brownies opens up a world of exciting challenges to girls aged seven to 10, giving them the space to try new things and make brilliant friends. Girls take part in a hugely varied weekly programme incorporating everything from stargazing, world issues and science to abseiling, canoeing and zip wiring.
