Milnrow and Newhey Carnival 2014

Date published: 15 June 2014

The Milnrow and Newhey Carnival, which is now in its 46th year, took place yesterday (14 June).

Hundreds of people lined the streets as the carnival parade, led by Milnrow Brass Band and the Mayor of Rochdale, began its usual route from Haugh Lane, Newhey. The carnival then continued down Huddersfield Road and into Milnrow.

A summer féte also took place at Milnrow Memorial Park featuring a funfair, a dj performing live music and a wide variety of stalls to browse. A Peppa Pig look-a-like also attended the park and proved a hit with children.

Mayor of Rochdale, Carol Wardle said: “We’re lucky to have to right weather today for the carnival.”

“Everyone has made a great effort, and the crowd are so cheerful. It’s a good day to raise some money.”

Local primary and pre-schools attended the carnival.

Milnrow Pre-school’s float was modelled on popular Children’s TV and books, with characters such as Harry Potter and Postman Pat making an appearance.

Abracadabra Pre-school took inspiration from an upcoming, local event and based their float on the Tour de France.

Newhey County Primary had a float representing an ‘English Country Garden’, showcasing garden gnomes and flowers.

St Thomas’ CE Primary remembered fallen soldiers with a World War I inspired float.

Local dance groups Loud Studio, High Crompton Dance Troupe and Milnrow Morris Troupe also performed in the parade.
