Heywood bank robbers arrested

Two men have been arrested and money recovered following a robbery at a bank in Heywood.

The men approached the bank on York Street and climbed onto the flat roof at the back of the property and cut through security bars.

The thieves smashed through the window and walked into the bank where they threatened members of staff with a crowbar and demanded cash.

They then stole cash and ran out of the bank and drove off in a car waiting outside.

Officers launched an investigation and enquiries led to an address close by where two men aged 34 and 38 were arrested and cash was also recovered.

Both men remain in custody for questioning.

Detective Inspector Robert Cousen from GMP’s Serious Crime Division, said: “Two men threatened one of the bank clerks, dragged her to a room and then pushed her onto the floor in what must have been an extremely terrifying experience. Other staff members were then forced onto the floor whilst these two men then searched for cash to steal.

“Following this incident officers from the Serious and Organised Crime Group and Rochdale Division launched a joint investigation which led them to an address where two men were arrested and cash was recovered.

“To arrest two suspected robbers so quickly after the incident is an excellent result and credit must go to everyone involved for their professionalism, dedication and determination.”
