Zarka Hussain wins food service competition

Zarka Hussain, 18, a hospitality student from Rochdale, was amongst the winners at the first Greater Manchester Colleges inter-skills competition.

Zarka shone through with her food service and gueridon skills to win first place in the Level 2 Food Service competition. Gueridon service refers to a trolley service where food is prepared or presented to the guests at their table.

Students took part in a number of competitions, which included scone making and flambé work.

After tough competition, winners for each category were announced by a panel of industry judges. These included Natasha Brown, owner of Browns Cakes, Rebecca Winskill, assistant restaurant manager at The French in Manchester, Gaynor Walton, general manager at The Crimble, Rob Walker, executive chef for Deckers restaurant, Sir Bill Moorcroft, ex chef and Principal Trafford College, Richard Dixon head chef at the Whitehart Restaurant, Lydgate and Noel Goulding, a catering consultant.
