On street parking to be free on Bank Holidays

Date published: 09 June 2014

The new leader of Rochdale Council, Councillor Richard Farnell has backed a call for on street parking in Rochdale to be free on bank holidays.

On 5 June we reported on the case of a shopper who was given a £50 ticket for parking on Cheetham Street and yet had she parked in a council car park it would have been free. Councillor Farnell agrees that it is "ludicrous" that council car parks should be free on Bank Holidays and yet council street parking charges should still be levied.

Talking to Rochdale Online, Councillor Farnell said that the income from on street parking on Bank Holidays is just £6,400 per year and scrapping such charges would in fact save money because not as many enforcement officers (traffic wardens) would be needed.

Councillor Farnell has also expedited a report into all council car parking charges. He said: "I want to see the borough more vibrant and to help businesses as much as possible and if its economically viable we should do something about car parking charges."
