Crime Prevention tips for the week

Emergency services have this week launched their summer drink and drug driving campaign and it will run throughout the month of June.

Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service and North West Ambulance Service have joined forces with the Police & Crime Commissioner, Drivesafe and local authorities to raise awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

The month-long operation will see police officers on patrol around the clock targeting suspected drink drivers. Police will also be using new portable drug testing machines to test instantly whether a driver is under the influence of drugs, rather than having to wait for a doctor to administer a blood test.

During last year’s summer drink drive campaign police carried out almost 5,000 breath tests and arrested 252 people. Following on from Christmas, police are continuing to encourage abstinence rather than restraint and will be hammering home the ‘none for the road’ message using social media and posters in pubs.

This year’s World Cup heightens the risk of drink driving and while the police are not looking to spoil anybody’s fun, they urge supporters to plan ahead and arrange transport prior to kick off so they don’t turn an evening of celebration into a lifetime of regret.

Holiday security checklist

If you are going on holiday, please make ensure you take the relevant precautions to make sure your home is safe and secure from burglars. Burglars target houses that look empty, so here is some advice on how to ensure your home is kept safe and secure so you don’t come home to a nasty shock:

  • Make sure your premises are secured every time you leave, even if only for a short time
  • Make sure your alarm, if you have one, is set
  • Put lights on a timer switch to make your house look occupied. You can also get timer switches for the radio and/or TV
  • Ask a neighbour to push post through your letterbox and take in any deliveries for you
  • Cancel milk, newspapers and any other deliveries
  • Ask a neighbour to park their car on your drive so that passers-by assume someone is home
  • If you have a close friend or relative nearby with a key, ask them to draw your curtains in the evening and back in the morning. Don’t leave curtains drawn during the day.
  • If you have a lawn, mow it before you go away
  • Don’t display your home address on the outside of your luggage
  • Don’t publish your absence on the internet. Status updates, comments and photos on social media can all give away the fact that you are out of your home for an extended period.
  • Ensure any outdoor tools such as ladders are securely stored away as these could be used to force entry into your home.
  • Don’t leave a message on your answer phone saying that you are away

Events that have taken place

On Thursday 22 May there was an event to celebrate 35 years of the founding of the Alkrington Pensioners club, which meet every Thursday, at Thomas More Community Centre, and raise money for different charities. The event was run by Jean O Loughlan, O.B.E. There were several dignitaries from the church who attended along with Sgt Killen and PCSO Walsh, who were also invited to a three course buffet and entertainment later in the evening.

There was an extremely good attendance for the Care Watch Scheme meeting at Alkrington Surgery, Middleton on Thursday 5 June 2014.

The aim of the scheme is to identify vulnerable persons in the neighbourhood and then have a network of people in place that can assist with dealing with any particular person within the scheme. It may be a friend or a neighbour who is a key holder who has knowledge of the person’s illness, knowledge of the medication used by the person and knowledge of other people to contact in relation to the person.

This would see a reduction in calls to the police and other emergency services as some incidents could be dealt with by the members within the scheme. In addition, should an ambulance be required at a particular incident, it will be of great benefit to them if there is somebody present who knows the history of the person.

If any other residents in the areas of Middleton or Heywood would be interested in starting a Care Scheme in their area do get in touch with the Rochdale South Neighbourhood Policing Team on 0161 856 8701 or email at rochdalesouth@gmp.police.uk
