Heywood 1940s day back for its sixth year

Heywood 1940s Day is back for its sixth year, kicking off on Friday 27 June at Sandon House Community Centre with their '40s Extravaganza”' serving Hi-Tea and music from the Bango Man - the main event opens across the town on Saturday 28 June.

Amongst a myriad of 1940s style attractions is the Hill St Military Encampment, with displays including The British, Home Front, French Resistance, Scottish Highlanders, Russians, Women’s Land Army, German Luftwaffe and Prime Minister Chamberlain with his wife. Also an assortment of military vehicles including tanks, artillery armoured vehicles, guns, Antar’s, jeeps and classic cars. New to this year is the German Messerschmitt fighter plane ground display, the only on in the country.

Other attractions include:

  • Dancing with Wingtip Windy and Dapper Dan.
  • Music by Bango Man in and out of shops throughout the centre all day. 
  • Middleton Youth Brass Band playing at Morrisons Gap.
  • Experience an air raid in a 'shelter'.
  • A vintage fun fair with of the era rides, including a ghost train and chair plane accompanied by a large fair organ and sweets stall.
  • A George Formby tribute.
  • A vintage fire engine from the Rochdale Fire Museum.
  • A NAAFI selling light refreshments and outside a 40s Concert with songs, dance and acting from the era.
  • An army assault course, an armed forces parade and cadet demonstrations.
  • Display from the Model Boat Society.
  • Vintage swing.
  • Miniature steam railway
  • Stalls selling, vintage cakes, crafts, home made soaps, sweets and candy floss, ice-cream, wooden toys and other food.
