Peter Purcell to climb Mount Kilimanjaro for charity

Date published: 02 June 2014

Peter Purcell will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for Moodswings, a charity which helps people who suffer from Bipolar Disorder
and other mood disorders.

Peter will be starting his challenge on Thursday 19 June. He said: “I can’t wait to do it. I decided to do it as a personal goal as well as raising money for the charity.”

The charity works on the belief that people can recover from severe mood problems and move on to lead happier and fuller lives.

Peter said: “I first encountered Moodswings about three years ago. My mum Karen suffers from Bipolar Disorder and I was struggling to find help and advice. My mum was on the verge of a relapse and I didn’t want that to happen.

“Moodswings have been great over the last three years and have really helped my mum and are great at offering help and support to families and that is something I have benefited from.”

Peter now hopes to raise £7,500 for the charity after self-funding the trip himself.

Peter added: “One of the main reasons I have choosen such a large target of £7,500 is because I have witnessed first hand how much value the charity brings to people in need and Moodswings really does deserves every penny - that's why the trek is fully self-funded”

Peter is now preparing for the trip by training on a weekly basis at the Full Contact Performance Centre on Queensway, Rochdale with a personal trainer.

“I think it will be a good trip for my mental state as well. It will be a good time to reflect on the past eight years of my life and will hopefully start the next chapter of my life. I will be doing this trip in line with starting my own business so it is all about moving forward” said Peter.

Peter has been supported by a number of people and has already gone on to raise over £2,000.

“Lots of people are helping me and getting involved so it should be good a trip,” said Peter.
