Council paid £1.25 million to get out of Wheatsheaf Library lease

Date published: 31 May 2014

Rochdale Borough Council had to pay £1.25 million to get out of the 999 lease for the now former central library location in the Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre.

The library was relocated from the Wheatsheaf in early 2013 when Number One Riverside opened, however, the Council remained tied into the extraordinarily long and expensive lease.

The Council has also agreed as part of the deal to create a a 200 capacity car park on the site of the old bus station once the demolition work is complete.
