Jules Tomlinson has children’s book published

Date published: 27 May 2014

Jules Tomlinson, 46, has had his first novel ‘Serious Susie and The Dream Machine’ published by Bare Hill Books. Jules has lived and worked in Rochdale for the past 18 years and works as a Homeless Officer in a local hostel.

Jules said of his work in the town: “It’s a job I am very proud of and which I benefit greatly from. It’s extremely rewarding to support people through their
homeless issues and to help to make a positive change.”

His first novel is suitable for an audience of ages ten plus and was inspired partly by the authors concern about technology’s influence on children’s lives. Mr Tomlinson explains: “When I was in the last year of secondary school, computers were just making their first appearance in the classroom.

“I don’t think anyone would have guessed back then what a fundamental change technology would have on children in the future.”

Jules also described how the plot uncovers the dangers of smart phone applications, tablets and computers and their ability to inspire and influence a child. In his novel he takes it a step further by introducing a phone and app which together are capable of “something tangible with potentially dire consequences.”

The Rochdale based writer has already finished writing his next book, ‘Olga, Gwenie and a Jar Full of Nasties’. He added: “I have another idea that I am pondering over at the moment. I’m taking notes and building up the characters. Hopefully I have formulated the storyline properly but at present I am still mulling it all over.”

Jules started writing a few years ago to impress a girl. He carried on writing because he believed it to be a “great way of harnessing imagination.”

“Writing is a truly marvelous form of expression. I can recommend it to everyone.”

Jules concluded that people should read ‘Serious Susie and The Dream Machine’ because it is a fun story. He said of his hopes and plans for the book: “As long as people enjoy reading it then my plan has worked. My hopes are that more people will read it and enjoy the story.”

Serious Suise and The Dream Machine is available on Kindle from £4.11.
