Protest walk against Rooley Moor Wind Farm

Date published: 25 May 2014

A protest walk against the proposed wind farm at Rooley Moor saw one group of walkers set off from Rochdale with another set of walkers leaving from Rossendale today (Sun day 25 May).

The groups walked along Rooley Moor Road and met in the middle at the ruins of the old Moorcock pub.

The walk, which was organised by the Friends of Rooley Moor Road, saw local residents, dog walkers, horse riders and councillors Cecile and Surinder Biant turn out to support the protest.

Speaking to Rochdale Online before the walk, Graham Wright who helped organise the protest said: “We just want to say enough is enough really. We have enough wind farms in the area as it is.”

Gwyn Fitton, one of the Rochdale walkers, said: “I am not 100% against the wind farm but I am against the use of the road. It is a lovely road and it our only access road so if it is used by HGVs then it will be destroyed. I think it will damage the village as well.”

Paula Bradbury added: “The wind farm will completely spoil the views from our home. The views were one of the main reasons that we bought the house and if the wind farm goes ahead, we won't have those views any more.”

Coronation Power is planning to build a twelve turbine wind farm at Rooley Moor. The wind farm would generate power for around 20,000 homes in the North West.

If the scheme is approved and built, a £2m community fund will be established to support local initiatives in the vicinity of the wind farm, potentially in the fields of education and environment.

Coronation Power is still yet to submit its planning applications to Rochdale Council and Rossendale Council.
