Damon Geraghty wins silver medal in the wheelchair slalom

Date published: 26 May 2014

Damon Geraghty, a pupil at Redwood Secondary School, has won a silver medal in the wheelchair slalom event at the Wheelchair Championships.

The slalom event is an obstacle race designed for wheelchair users. The obstacles created include turns, changes in direction and ramps which put demands on the athletes speed, coordination, strength and technique to negotiate them in the least possible time.

The sport is designed only for those athletes with cerebral injury that need a wheelchair to move.

A spokesperson for Redwood Secondary School said: “A huge congratulations to Damon. This is a fantastic achievement and will perhaps give Damon the opportunity to take part in the national finals. Well done Damon – a great ambassador for those wheelchair students who take part in competition.”

The championships were held at the indoor arena at Sports City in Manchester.
