Four-year-old Ashleigh Smith wins Waterstones drawing competition

Date published: 20 May 2014

Ashleigh Smith, 4, from Rochdale, has been chosen as one of fifty winners of a drawing competition held by book shop Waterstones.

The competition asked entrants to draw a picture of their dad, granddad, uncle or guardian for posters advertising Father’s Day.

Ashleigh’s mum, Rachel said: “We were in the store in Manchester and we saw the competition in the children’s section and Ashleigh just decided to get involved and drew a picture of her dad.”

Ashleigh is already a huge fan of art and is quoted as telling her mum “art is my life”.

Rachel added: “We go through reams of paper with her because she is always drawing and colouring. We can’t just buy a few sheets, we have to buy lots of paper for her.”

Ashleigh’s drawing will now be made into a poster for Father’s Day, which will be displayed in Waterstones shops across the UK and Ireland.

“We actually forgot about the competition and then we got the phone call yesterday to tell us that she had won.

"We are extremely proud of her and she is just very excited about the whole thing” said Rachel.

Ashleigh will also receive a £20 Waterstones voucher, which the family will be picking up next week.

Ashleigh’s dad, Alex added: “As well as drawing, she loves reading so she will love the prize.”
