REAG clean up in Milkstone and Deeplish

Date published: 19 May 2014

Members of the Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG) cleaned Drake Street, Saint Chad, Caton Street, Mere Street, Devon Street, Milkstone Road, Drake Street, Boundary street, William Street, Essex Street, Sussex Street, Henry Street and Suffolk Street on Saturday (17 May) as part of their regular clean up.

One resident reported that he challenged a person who threw litter in the street where he lives and wanted to see a change in people’s attitude. A number of other residents were complaining about the anti social behaviour in their area and said that those involved in it were often seen throwing litter. They all agreed that they liked to see the area clean.

Some people clean their back allies and the front of their properties but say it’s not long before someone else comes along and disposes of their litter there again. For that reason, many give up trying to keep places tidy.

Members of the REAG spoke to youths who were playing football on the park of the Central Mosque and explained to them why keeping the area clean was important. The youths agreed to get involved in the next few weeks and will be cleaning up with members of the REAG.

REAG believes that the enforcement of the litter and environmental laws is the only way to improve the environment in the area.

Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE, Secretary of the Group, said: “Members of the REAG are committed to improving the environment. We hope that all residents, businesses and organisations will work together to achieve it. Rochdale is our town and we should be proud of its history, culture, roads, streets and parks where our children play. Only people of Rochdale can make Rochdale more beautiful, safer and a better place to live and work."
