St John with St Michael win a Silver award

Date published: 17 May 2014

The Eco-School Council from St John with St Michael Primary School in Shawforth organised a whole week based on Roald Dahl which included a quiz night, dress up day, revolting recipes and visits to the local library. They also started a book swap scheme, a comic club and a Reading Challenge booklet. The Lancashire Library Story Bus also visited the school.

The school entered the initiative into The Chairman's Challenge 2014 and for the third year running they got through to the grand finals at the County Hall in Preston.

A group of five Eco-Councillors along with Miss Glendenny, a parental volunteer, Miss Kenyon and Mrs Driver, the Eco-School coordinators, Mr Sims, a school governor and the headteacher Mrs Thomas, travelled to Preston.

The children had to do a ten minute presentation in front of a panel of judges from all different Lancashire initiatives - even the High Sheriff was there.

Miss Kenyon was thrilled to bits when they announced the 2nd prize Silver award winner as St John with St Michael's.

She said: "I am so proud of all my children, and the parents and also the wider community who pulled together to help my children set up the Roald Dahl week, donated books and comics and volunteer their time to come into school to read.

“I would like to thank Bright Books from Shawclough who helped us set up a book fair, provided books for our children which we used as prizes for the quiz night and they also sourced us guided reading books.

“It has been a wonderful few months and reading has really taken off, especially with the boys who have discovered books like the Beast Quest series and Horrid Henry."

The initiative was to encourage children and parents, to read more and read for enjoyment.
