Second stage of Rochdale town centre demolition gets underway

The Broadwater Centre and old St Andrews Church in Rochdale town centre will soon be reduced to rubble with demolitions set to start this Monday 19 May.
It is expected to take Connell Brothers Ltd, who are currently undertaking the wider town centre demolition work, around eight weeks to clear the area to make way for the proposed retail and leisure development known as town centre east.
The congregation of St Andrews moved to a state-of-the-art new church and community building on Entwisle Road in January, while the Back Door Music Project and Skylight Circus, which used the Broadwater Centre, have been relocated.
Connells will use some of the rubble from the existing demolition site to fill in the remaining pool areas underneath the Broadwater Centre which opened as Rochdale’s first public baths in 1868 and closed as a swimming baths in 1937. Archaeologists will be brought in to record any remaining historical features from the original baths.
