Deadly canine disease outbreak

Date published: 15 May 2014

Dog owners in the borough are being warned to keep their pet’s vaccinations up-to-date as vets deal with an ongoing outbreak of the killer disease Parvovirus in other parts of the country.

The disease is highly contagious to unvaccinated dogs and causes severe vomiting, diarrhoea and damage to the gut. It affects mainly puppies and young animals but owners should be aware that no dog is immune to the virus.

Crown House Vets and Wendy Lane Vets have confirmed there have been no outbreaks to date in the borough but owners must be vigilant with the upkeep of their dog’s vaccinations.

In some cases, death can occur within 24 hours as a result of Parvovirus.

Canine diseases that had started to disappear have also started to re-emerge due to a lack of ‘herd immunity’- this means that unprotected animals can become immune if enough of the canine population are vaccinated.
