Milnrow & Newhey Carnival now in its 46th year

Date published: 13 May 2014

Milnrow & Newhey Carnival, which is now in its 46th year, is scheduled to place on Saturday 14 June 2014. The event brings together the local community with a procession from Newhey to Milnrow - followed by a fete with stalls and activities.

The day is enjoyed by many people each year, who line the streets to watch the parade and attend the summer fete afterwards at Milnrow Memorial Park.

The parade starts at 1.00pm at Haugh Lane, Newhey. The carnival route will be the same as in previous years, it will proceed down Huddersfield Road and through Milnrow.

There will be carnival queens float with Carnival Queens Chloe Rigby and Holly Copping, Princesses Lucy Brown and Tia Foster and Rosebuds Nancy-Jane Duffy and Enola Duffy. Milnrow Brass Band will lead the parade, with the Mayor of Rochdale.

Crossgates Primary School, Moorhouse Primary School, St Thomas C of E Primary School and Newhey County Primary School will be participating in the parade along with Milnrow Pre-School and Abracadabra Pre-School.

Local dance groups, Loud Studio and High Crompton Dancing Troupe will be in the procession along with Milnrow Cricket Club, Scan Computers, RKT Trust and Rochdale Heartbeat.

The summer fete will take place at Milnrow Memorial Park, from 12 noon until 6.00pm. With free entry into the park, the summer fete promises to be a spectacular event with a funfair, a miniature railway ride, a dj with live music, hot and cold food and a wide variety of stalls. A Peppa Pig look-a-like will also be at the park at various times through the day to meet the children.

"The aim of the day is for the local community to come together to enjoy the carnival parade and summer fete, so come along and show your support," said Paul Kettle, Chairman of Milnrow & Newhey Carnival Committee.

At the summer fete wristbands with numbers embossed onto them will be distributed for a free raffle at 4.00pm at the music stage, first prize is an iPad Mini, with other prizes kindly donated from local businesses.

The funfair will be in the park from Friday to Sunday. On Sunday 15 June there will be a car boot sale at Milnrow Memorial Park, £10 a car with all donations towards Milnrow & Newhey Carnival fund. The park opens to sellers at 8.00am and to the general public at 9.00am on the Sunday morning.

If you would like to take part in the parade, have a stall at the park or have an enquiry about the car boot sale, please contact the Carnival Secretary.

If you would like to participate in the parade but do not have a vehicle, please contact the Carnival Secretary as the committee would be happy to arrange a float for you.
