Students win cook and serve competition

Date published: 12 May 2014

Catering and hospitality students won first place in an intercollege Cook and Serve competition held at Manchester College earlier this year and received their trophy at a celebratory Gala Dinner last weekend.

Eight teams from catering colleges all over the region competed and Hopwood Hall College won this year’s Cook and Serve competition after coming second last year.

The winning team was made up of three chefs and two waitresses:

  • Emma Walters, 19, chef
  • Reece Hunt, 19, chef
  • Adam Teal, 18 chef
  • Zarka Hussain, 19, waitress
  • Katherine Heapy, 18, waitress

They prepared and served an exquisite three course meal of:

  • Poached fillets of lemon sole with wilted spinach in a chive butter sauce
  • Roast chump of lamb with potatoes, creamed cabbage and baby vegetables in a port wine sauce
  • Plum and sour cream tart

Chef Adam Teal commented: “I am really proud of myself this year. I feel I have grown up and know that cooking is what I want for a career. I am really enjoying the competitions and like the pressure.”

Katherine, who served the meal, said: “I loved being on the competition team and really enjoy being front of house. I have just completed six weeks work experience at the Michelin star restaurant, The French, at the Midland Hotel in Manchester which was a great experience for me.”
