Youths starting fires in the area of Cheapside North Middleton

Police in Middleton are asking you to keep a lookout for any youths that may be acting suspicious in this area, we have had three reports over the last two weeks, whereby plastic council works barriers have been set on fire and a deliberate fire started in the entrance to Kidz Club Assheton Street.

Officers from Middleton’s Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) will continue to give high visibility patrols in the area and highlight offenders, but we need YOUR HELP.

Please be vigilant, be alert to strangers/youths loitering in the street, Ensure there is no combustible material, lying around which could be easily accessible to an arsonist, always keep any accelerants locked away securely. Don't let rubbish accumulate, and keep wheelie-bins away from the house. Never put yourself in any danger.

Only attempt to put out a fire yourself, when it is in its very early stages.

Anyone with information on fires being deliberately started are advised to anonymously call Crimestoppers free on 0800 555 111 or email rochdalesouth@gmp.police.uk or contact the police on 101 with information.

Crime Prevention tips for the week
Scams Awareness Month 2014

May is Scams Awareness Month. As you are probably aware, there are thousands of different types of scams, and it can get confusing and difficult to know how best to protect yourself.

According to the Trading Standards Institute, only five per cent of scams are reported. This is because so many people feel shame or embarrassment at being caught out.

A police spokesman said: "We don't want people to suffer in silence. We want you to help us encourage your neighbours, relatives and friends to report scams or attempted scams to www.actionfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040.

"You can download useful anti-scam resources from www.thinkjessica.com, a charity protecting elderly and vulnerable people from scams. For a small charge of £2 to cover postage and packing you can also order hard copies of A4/A5 posters from them - contact advice@thinkjessica.com for more information.

"This week the campaign is focusing on online scams. For information about staying safe online, visit www.getsafeonline.org or www.cyberstreetwise.com. Both of those sites have lots of useful information."

Events that took place this week:
On 7 May PCSO Quinn visited St Mary’s Primary School, Langley, Middleton along with an officer and police car to speak to five-year-old children about the role of the police in the community.
