Lee Tennant to complete two challenges for charity

Date published: 09 May 2014

Lee Tennant from Heywood will be cycling from North Wales to South Wales to raise money for Cancer Research UK. He will then climb the 'three peaks challenge' to raise money for Bolton Hospice.

Lee, who has done similar bike rides in the past, is aiming to complete the ride all in one day with the hopes of reaching his final destination within 20 hours.

He said: “Last year I cycled from Cleethorpes on the East coast to Lytham St Anne's on the West coast. I did this over two days with a friend and we raised quite a bit for Cancer Research UK. This inspired me to do something bigger and better this year and to try and raise even more money. Over winter I searched distances and routes and I came up with the route I now have for North to South Wales (Prestatyn to Barry Island).”

Lee’s bike ride will all raise money for Cancer Research UK – a charity close to Lee’s heart.

He added: “I lost my uncle (my mum's brother) at an early age to cancer, my school friend lost her dad at an early age, my wife has suffered and fully recovered from a cancer scare, and only last month my mum lost her cousin to cancer, so it has affected a lot of people close to me. I wanted to do something to help raise money to help treatments develop and to help people recover or have a longer better quality of life.”

As well as his previous cycle from Cleethoropes to Lytham St Anne's, Lee has completed the Rivington 100 – a 100 mile cycle ride over the West Pennine Moors for Cancer Research UK and completed the Yorkshire 10k in 2009 for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Lee will complete this bike ride on his own but will be accompanied by a friend driving a support vehicle. Lee said: “This year I am doing it on my own as my friend who would have done it with me got knocked off her bike and was injured earlier this year. One of my other friends will be driving my car as a support vehicle and meeting up at 50 mile intervals.”

As well as the bike ride, Lee will also be looking to complete the three peaks challenge by climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Mount Snowdon. Lee and a friend hope to complete the challenge within 24 hours.

Lee said: “This is an event I have always wanted to do but never had a team of people to do it that were all free at the same time. But this year it all fell into place.”

The three peaks challenge will be raising money for Bolton Hospice who supports terminally ill people.
