Katie Bowmer - Junior Woman of Rochdale 2014

Date published: 09 May 2014

Katie Bowmer has been awarded the first Junior Woman of Rochdale title at a celebratory luncheon this afternoon (Friday 9 May).

Katie was nominated for the award for her continued efforts and contributions to business, community and education.

Born in Rochdale, Katie attended school in Littleborough and went on to study Psychology at University before returning to live and work in Rochdale.

Having made strong contacts with Bury and Hopwood colleges she has encouraged the companies she works with to take on apprentices with her acting as a mentor to those young people.

At the age of 26, Katie is also a Business Development and HR Manager for three local companies.

As well as working hard within business, Katie has fundraised for a number of causes by taking part in fun runs and the Race for Life event.

Announcing her as the winner of the award, Rochdale Online Managing Director Pauline Journeaux said: “This young lady was nominated for being passionate about Rochdale, being professional, enthusiastic and, having personally met her at a business event recently, a thoroughly lovely young lady.”

Upon receiving her award, Katie said: “I am truly shocked. I didn’t expect to win this at all. I am truly passionate about Rochdale and business and what businesses can do support charities like Springhill Hospice. I hope to be able to help work and get Rochdale back to what it was.”

Katie’s mum, Julie added: “I am extremely proud. I think she is an ambassador for young people and is showing that young people can achieve whatever they want.”

This is the first time the Woman of Rochdale luncheon has awarded a junior award after organisers decided to encourage younger residents of the borough to be nominated.

Katie triumphed over six other nominees to be crowned the Junior Woman of Rochdale. Organisers now hope to make this an annual award at the Woman of Rochdale luncheon.
