The Stroke Association calls on Rochdale to step out for Action on Stroke Month

Date published: 07 May 2014

The Stroke Association is calling on residents in Rochdale to take part in the charity’s Step out for Stroke event. The fundraising walk is part of Action on Stroke Month, when the Stroke Association aims to promote stroke awareness and prevention as well as raise vital funds for the charity.

People taking part in the Step out for Stroke event will take part in a pre-walk warm up from the Rochdale Hornets and will be entertained by music from the Rochdale Carers Choir. Bikers from the Lancashire Road Riders will also be on hand to help start the event. There will also be stalls selling handmade jewellery and crafts along with a face painter to entertain little ones.

Sheila Palmer, from Cutgate, attends the Communication Support group in Rochdale each fortnight. She had her first stroke aged just 23 and her most recent stroke was four years ago, which has affected her memory. She’ll be taking part in the Step out for Stroke event for the third year running.

Sheila said: “I love being a part of Step out for Stroke and it’s a highlight of the year for us. My whole family comes along to support me, including my eight grandchildren! It’s a great way to raise awareness about stroke.”

Joanne Mundey, Step out for Stroke organiser said: “Step Out for Stroke walks are fully accessible whatever your walking ability, wheelchairs and pushchairs are more than welcome too. People taking part in the walk set their own pace and distance they want to cover. Anyone can take part, and we are really keen to invite stroke survivors and people affected by stroke to join in with their family and friends.

“Being part of a Step Out for Stroke walk is an inspiring experience, but there’s a serious purpose behind it; stroke is the leading cause of complex adult disability in the UK. At the Stroke Association we want to be there for everyone affected by stroke, so please do join us and raise the funds that will help make that possible.”
