Hundreds of people gathered at St Leonard’s Square, Middleton this afternoon (Monday 5 May) for the annual May Day celebrations.

The celebrations kicked off at 11:45am with a traditional procession from the band stand in Jubilee Park to Saint Leonard's Square.

Led by the Saint Michael’s Band, the procession included Saddleworth Morris Men, Mayor Peter Rush, MP Jim Dobbin, Middleton councillors and pupils from local schools.

Once at Saint Leonard’s Square, Mayor Rush officially opened the afternoon’s celebrations. He said: “It is my great pleasure to welcome everyone here today and to officially open these celebrations. I hope everyone has a brilliant day.”

The Glenda Ann School of Dance and the Saddleworrh Morris Men then held dance performances for the hundreds in attendance.

Dances around the maypole took place with children from Parkfield Primary, Little Heaton and Saint Gabriel’s all getting involved.

As well as an afternoon of dance and entertainment, stalls were lined up around the square and included Hulton Care Home, the Royal British Legion and Middleton Lions.

The event was funded by Middleton Township and organised by Middleton Round Table.
