Man crushed between wall and HGV

A man has been seriously injured in an industrial accident in Heywood.

At around 12pm on Thursday 1 May a man was pinned against a wall by a HGV on an industrial estate on Moss Hall Road.

It is understood that the man’s spine was crushed and he has suffered a punctured lung as a result of the incident. He is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “A man has been arrested in connection with the incident and the full details have been passed to the Health and Safety Executive.”

Police and ambulance crews attended the scene for a number of hours yesterday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the HSE added: “We can confirm that the incident did take place and enquiries into the incident are currently ongoing.”

It is understood that the injured man was working at the Fowler Welch Distribution Centre on the Heywood Distribution Park.

Fowler Welch have issued the following statement regarding this incident.

“Fowler Welch can confirm that an incident took place involving a third party delivery vehicle at our Heywood site on Thursday 1st May, which resulted in one of the two drivers of the third party vehicle being hospitalised for the injuries sustained.

“We are supporting the authorities in investigating the incident, which we believe not to have directly involved any Fowler Welch employees. Our thoughts are with the injured man and his family at this time.”
