Rochdale Council will not be including Lancashire on boundary signs

Date published: 02 May 2014

Putting the county name of Lancashire on street signs will not be implemented by Rochdale Council.

Councils are soon to be given the opportunity to put traditional county names on boundary road signs as part of reforms announced by Eric Pickles, the MP in charge of local government.

Mr Pickles has announced changes to planning rules allowing councils to put up boundary signs marking traditional English counties.

Mark Widdup, Director of Economy and Environment at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “We don’t currently have any plans to change our street signs to include the historic county of Lancashire. Although we feel it is important to celebrate the history of the borough, we are proud to have been part of Greater Manchester for more than 40 years
and feel such a change would be confusing for visitors.”

Rochdale, which historically was part of Lancashire, became part of Greater Manchester in 1974.
