Jailed lorry driver ordered to pay back £45,000
Date published: 02 May 2014
Heywood lorry driver, Neil Bates, who was jailed in January for his part in a global shares scam, has been ordered to pay back nearly £45,000.
Bates, 56, was jailed for 12 months after allowing fraudsters to use his bank account. He admitted a single count of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation.
A court has now ordered Bates to repay almost £45,000 that remained in a bank account after the scam was foiled.
Victims of the scam lost almost £440,000 that had been paid in to a number of accounts in return for shares that never arrived.
It is understood that Bates was left to take the fall for the scam after the real fraudsters got away.
