Aspiring medical students look to the future

Date published: 01 May 2014

A group of 14 Rochdale Sixth Form College students visited Hull and York Medical School to try their hand at medicine.

The aspiring medics got the chance to learn some clinical skills like taking blood pressure and calculating BMI. Students were then allowed to work in laboratories where they learnt how samples are tested.

They were joined by current first and second year medical students from Hull and York Medical School, who gave them advice on what it takes to become a medical student.

The students were also given guidance on their medical school applications by admission tutors and how to earn a coveted place in the competitive world of medicine.

AS Level, Christopher Barnes, said: “The practical sessions enabled me to gain insight into the basic procedures and interpersonal skills any physician will use every day to meet the health care demands.

"I feel even more determined to pursue a career in this stimulating, challenging and essential field that many of us rely on at some point in our lives.”

Employability Coordinator at Rochdale Sixth Form College, Jennie Morgan, said: “This trip was an eye-opening experience for the students as they were able to learn first-hand the demands of studying medicine and the skills and qualities required to be a successful undergraduate student.”

The year 12 students will begin their university applications this autumn in the new term.
