Town Centre demolition update

Date published: 29 April 2014

The scaffolding being erected around the black box has now almost reached the top of the structure - it is expected the top will be reached next week.

Since our last update the old bus station has been completely levelled and demolition contractors, Connell Brothers are currently removing the remains.

Now the old bus station is gone, the Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre can be seen from Riverside, the Transport Interchange and the Metrolink stop, and gives a glimpse of what is set to become an important town centre focal point once the new entrance planned for the Wheatsheaf is completed - the drawings will be revealed soon.

Telegraph House, a sizeable building, can also been seen but that too is scheduled for demolition.

Looking from the Wheatsheaf Centre, of course Riverside and the Transport Interchange are now visible over the top of the remains of the old bus station.

Shoppers can continue to access the Wheatsheaf from Baillie Street or Yorkshire Street until the new entrance opens at the end of November.

Once the demolition is complete, a 200 capacity car park will be constructed on the site of the old bus station, with landscaped walkways being laid where the black box once stood. Longer term, a shopping and leisure facility will be constructed on the cleared site.
