Oulder Hill student wins Young Person of the Year

Date published: 29 April 2014

On Thursday 27 March, the Mayor’s Youth Awards ceremony took place at Rochdale Town Hall. These awards recognise the skills, effort and achievements of young people from across the borough and are the pinnacle in terms of this type of recognition.

Students from Oulder Hill had been nominated in a number of categories by both school staff and members of the community. From those nominations, a shortlist of three was drawn up in each category, those young people were then invited to the awards evening with their family.

Below are the students who were shortlisted, the category they were shortlisted in and the overall result. It was a very special evening and all of the students detailed below are a credit to themselves and the school; to be shortlisted for this evening is an incredibly special achievement.

The Year 9 Boys Football team played Hollingworth in the Quarter Finals of the cup and were narrowly beaten 4-2. Oulder Hill went 1-0 up with a superb long range shot from Steven Nairn. Hollingworth then equalised shortly afterwards with a fast counter attack to bring the score level. Brandon Kwei-Sutcliffe then scored again for Oulder Hill, after some outstanding wing play from Cameron Filkin, to put Oulder Hill back into the lead.

As half-time approached Hollingworth began to dominate possession and scored from a corner to bring the score to 2-2. Hollingworth started the second half the way they had finished the first and began to dominate possession. Unfortunately, the class of the Hollingworth wingers was too much for Oulder Hill and they scored a further two goals in quick succession to finish the game 4-2. Mr Pickles’ Man of the Match was Dominic Boothman for some outstanding saves produced throughout the match.

The team were as follows:Dominic Boothman, Brandon Kwei-Sutcliffe, Brandon Coughlan, Will Moore, Ben Howarth, Cameron Filkin, Steven Nairn, Daniel Cryer, Will Taylor, Jamie Ogden, Owain Harrison and Kristian Kean.

Monday 5 May is a Bank Holiday, school will be closed on this day and re-opens as normal on Tuesday 6.

During this week, Year 10 students will be taking their History Controlled Assessment.

On Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May, students registered on the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award will be undertaking their Practice Expedition.
