Letter from Parliament – Jim Dobbin MP

Date published: 29 April 2014

Mr Cameron’s sudden declaration on evangelism and Christianity is another example of the Prime Minister opening his mouth before his brain engages. It is more evidence of how this PR man runs the country. He could concentrate on a number of government policies that are hurting people. He could, for example, examine in detail the effect that his Personal Independent Payment Scheme (PIP), which replaced his failed Disability Living Allowance, is having on people with a disability. I have had a number of constituents who come to my surgery having been unfairly affected by this latest piece of legislation. It is causing severe stress to many deserving claimants.

Locally it is unfortunate that the Borough of Rochdale is once again the centre of national concern. There are so many positive aspects to this town, the Co-operative history, the town's attractions and the many cultural strengths are to be promoted nationally. I hope that we are able to create balance in our development and promotion of Rochdale in the national view so that we do not undermine a good future for our young people and families.

The Transport Select Committee is giving its support to the introduction of the High Speed Rail link to Birmingham and the North West. I understand that the ten Greater Manchester authorities and the business community throughout the region are in support. As a member of the Select Committee, I will push for work on the network to begin north of Manchester as well as Birmingham.

I was pleased to visit the Middleton Youth Market. It was great to see the entrepreneurial spirit of our young people. Congratulations go to Middleton Town Team staff for supporting this venture.

Parliament has returned this week following the Easter break. As I said in my last article, don’t expect the legislative agenda to be exciting. We are now in the year before the next election. Let’s see how the Government manages policy making over that time.
