Heywood Scouts and District Explorers complete 100ft abseil

Date published: 28 April 2014

Scouts from 1st Heywood (St John's, Hopwood) and Heywood District Explorer Unit Scouts took a daring leap when they abseiled from the 100 foott St Anne's Church Tower in Royton on Saturday 26 April.

The very first leap of the day was taken by the intrepid Phoebe Bamford aged 11 who was brave enough to go before all of the boys and the leaders.

One scout conquered his fear of the abseil by thinking about the 100 foot narrow spiral stone staircase that had to be scaled before the abseil. Unlit, dusty and very steep, he said he would rather go down the rope than back down the stairs.

Altogether 12 Scouts and Explorer Scouts abseiled down the tower with some receiving sponsorship for their efforts.

Money raised from the abseil went to support 3rd Royton scouts who staged the event and to support an activities fund to ensure that all scouts can take part in activities whatever their financial background.
