From Farm to Fork

Date published: 25 April 2014

Year 2 children from St John with St Michael CE Primary School in Shawforth visited Tesco Store in Rawtenstall to take part in their "From Farm to Fork" Eat Happy Project.

Tesco are aiming for all children to be fit and healthy and to help them on that journey they gave the children a tour of the store, let them have a go on the tills scanning food items and packing them, a tour of the bakery and a bread tasting session.

They also looked at the butcher’s counter where they spoke about where certain meats come from, how to cook them and also the health and safety aspects of handling raw meats.

The children were fascinated with the fishmonger who showed them how to gut a fish, de-scale it and also de-bone it.

The Delicatessen area was another favourite of the children’s as they tasted different cheeses and sampled ham and tongue.

Later in the tour the children went on a Rainbow Fruit and Veg hunt where they had to find fruit or vegetable items for each colour of the rainbow - blue proved to be a little tricky!

Each child also enjoyed a British fruit pot containing some delicious seasonal fruits and a drink before they left to return to school they were awarded with a certificate and a goody bag.

Crystal said: "I have really enjoyed our trip today, I didn't know that Mussells were alive in the bags and I wasn't bothered feeling the lambs kidney at the butchers part."
