A vision to make life more enjoyable for young people with disabilities

Date published: 25 April 2014

Redwood Secondary School in Rochdale is a special school catering for the needs of 235 students aged between 11-19 years with generic learning needs all of whom have a statement of special education.

Their first project is to develop an outside sensory area, including purchasing a wheelchair accessible roundabout to accompany an accessible swing previously purchased by friends and family of Karen Hennessy.

These pieces of accessible equipment will be utilised by over 60 students in wheelchairs or who use mobility aids, throughout the day and in their after school clubs. The mobility impaired students will be able to use the roundabout with their peers who can walk unaided.

The roundabout would also be used by other disabled special needs students across the area who access Redwood's youth clubs and holidays clubs during the year. In the last year approximately 135 children with disabilities attended these activities.
