Junior Wardens Go Global

Date published: 10 April 2014

A taste of Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe came to Smallbridge as the Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH) Junior Wardens held a celebration of three cultures at their 3-2-1 event.

Youngsters from Lower Falinge, Kirkholt and Back O’Th Moss joined the Stara Junior Wardens from Smallbridgeto take part in an afternoon of music, dance, fun and delicious international cuisine.

Much hard work had gone into their preparations with each of the youngsters learning about life in India, Nigeria or Poland.

They gave short speeches about what they had learned before delighting the watching crowd with a display of traditional dancing from the countries.

After all that activity, there was the chance for a well deserved treat as they tucked into some tasty snacks popular in the three nations.

Other highlights at the event included a bouncy castle, face-painting, hair-braiding and the chance to make some Easter decorations.

Ruth Sillence, RBH Communities First Co-ordinator, said: “It was a wonderful afternoon and I would like to thankeveryone who helped organise it.

“The young people put in a tremendous amount of work to prepare their routines and speeches and so it was great to see everythinggo so well.

“We were all very impressed at how keen they were to learn about other countries, something that will be of great benefit to them living in multi-cultural communities.”
One person who certainly had fun at the event was nine-year-old ShelbyMeadowcroft, a member of the Stara Junior Wardens.

Shelby said: “I had a great time and really enjoyed doing the Indian dancing. It was really interesting to learn about how people in another country live and it’s something I would like to do again.”
