Homework club mark the occasion

Date published: 09 April 2014

Volunteers from the Lower Falinge Community Activity Group have taken time out to celebrate the achievements of the Lower Falinge Homework Club.

The club has been funded for the last 12 months via Rochdale Boroughwide Housing’s (RBH) Our Choice venture which gives residents the chance to shape the future of their communities.

The participatory grant has provided young people in Lower Falinge with a place to keep up with their studies and receive one-to-one encouragement and support from volunteer mentors.

Guests who attended the presentation were given the opportunity to hear at first hand just how valued the club is by its members.

Alexia, 10, said: “The volunteers are brilliant because they help us when we want and don’t ignore us.”

Courtney, 11, added: “I like Homework Club because it is a place where I can concentrate and it helps me get my homework done for school.”

To highlight what for many is a new-found confidence, each of the young people stood up in front of the audience, a mixture of parents and RBH employees, to share their experiences.

Lower Falinge Homework Club volunteer Andy Littlewood said: “We are really proud of the group’s achievements – they have shown a marked improvement in the quality of their homework.

“We would like to thank RBH for the funding and are looking forward to delivering support to these young people and others for a further 12 months.”
