50 years of model railway exhibitions

Date published: 08 April 2014

Rochdale Model Railway Group is celebrating 50 years since they started their exhibitions this weekend (Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 April).

Over the last 50 years the group has brought some of the very best examples of model railway layouts to the borough.

Of particular interest at this exhibition is Andy Cooper’s accurate model of the station at Newhey as it was in the 1960s. Although the real thing has been demolished to make way for the new Metrolink, some buildings are still recognisable such as the large cotton warehouse.

This week is Rochdale Wakes week on the layout so some spectacular trains will be running along the line.

Also attending is Tollesbury Quay – a brand new layout based on a light railway in Essex which includes a working tide.

There will also be plenty of other layouts to see during the two day exhibition with refreshments available.
