Councillors praise Metrolink extension

Date published: 03 April 2014

Members of Rochdale Council expressed their delight that the Metrolink tram line has finally made its way into Rochdale Town Centre.

The praise came during the final council meeting before Election Day with many councillors stating that they were “happy to see it running into town.”

Councillor Allen Brett was the first councillor to speak. He said: “It is great to see the tram making its way into the town centre. I used it to get here this evening and I have to say that it is a smooth ride.”

Councillor Peter Winkler added: “It is nice to hear that the tram is well used.”

Councillor Andy Kelly, who was on board the tram as it made its first journey into the town centre, also offered his praise for the service.

Councillor Peter Joinson said that he would like to see the tram extended to Heywood and Middleton. He said: “I welcome the tram to Rochdale but would like to ask the leader of the council, how realistic is it that we see this coming to Heywood and Middleton because I would certainly welcome it?”

Leader of the Council, Councillor Colin Lambert has previously stated that he would like to see the Metrolink extended across the borough. In response to Councillor Joinson, he said: “The decision comes from central government so we need to emphasise to the office that this is something we want. It takes energy and commitment and we need to take this idea to them.”

Councillor Ian Duckworth offered his praise and added: “I am pleased to see the tram in Rochdale.”

Councillor Pat Sullivan, who uses the tram regularly, was also pleased to see the tram heading into the town centre but did ask for security to be improved when the tram was in operation at night.

She added: “I don’t think it is a nice experience for people at night using the tram. It if often full of drunk and abusive people so it would be nice to see officers on board to offer a bit more support for people.”

This is something Councillor Lambert said he would follow up with TfGM.

The town centre stop opened to the public on Monday 31 March and the response from the public has been almost universally positive.
