New artist’s impressions reveal just how striking the transformation of the Victoria Metrolink stop will be once complete.
The project began in late February and will see the stop completely redesigned and expanded to provide additional platforms and tracks, accommodating the new Second City Crossing and wider network expansion.
The stop itself is temporarily closed and Metrolink services will be running on a single line route through the station for the duration of the work, which is being carried out in conjunction with the transformation of the railway station by Network Rail.
Work is progressing well: contractors have started to create new inbound track and a new stop equipment room.
Peter Cushing, Transport for Greater Manchester’s Metrolink Director, said: “The project at Victoria is an incredibly important development, not just because we are transforming a major gateway into the city but because of the operational benefits it will bring.
“An expanded Victoria, together with the Second City Crossing, means we can run more trams on more tracks which, in turn, means more flexible services – all of which is essential given that we’re trebling the size of the network.
“So it’s great to see work under way and I’m pleased with how well the challenging single-line service through the station has bedded in.”
The Metrolink stop works and associated enhancements are being funded by the Greater Manchester Transport Fund and European Regional Development Fund Programme 2007 to 2013.
