English students tour Shakespeare and Marlowe’s London

A-Level English Literature students from Rochdale Sixth Form College have visited London to further their studies.

The students took a guided walking tour around Shakespeare and Marlowe’s London before watching a performance of Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus at the historic Rose Theatre, Bankside.

The production allowed students to view one of their English Literature set-texts in an innovative live performance in London’s oldest theatre, which will help their understanding and interpretations of the text.

The students also had the honour of singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to Marlowe on the 450th anniversary of his birth in the theatre where his works were first performed in the sixteenth century.

Tom McCaskill-Baxter, English Teacher at Rochdale Sixth Form College, said “The trip was a huge success, the performance in particular built upon what we have been learning in the classroom. The students’ enthusiasm for the tour was also fantastic to see.”
